All that’s left is the sorrow of losing something as silly as absurd cups, the shock of how they came to ruin, and the joy in having owned them at all.
Wow such a beautiful story of life within these cups. As you read you get exactly what you are feeling within your life in these cups. It is not silly or crazy it is true these cups were paired up as in a marriage also. Everything is energy as l am learning so much about the planet. It’s like a living older couple where one passes away and the other cannot live without each other. I had this happen to a great great aunt and uncle l met 1 time in my early life. The woman passed away and a few days later the husband did also of heartbreak without his wife near him. So l loved this so much thank you for posting this.
That is exactly how I felt, too. It reminded me also of people and animals who lose their will to live after their beloved passes away. Thank you so much for this kind and thoughtful comment, I so appreciate it. ❤️
How did I miss this one?! I can understand why you are proud of this piece. Yes we do get attached to "silly things" like tea/coffee mugs don't we? I think you are right, that we subliminally involve them in all our plans, wishes and sometimes conspiracies (haha!). Also, as part of a still-life sketch or painting, they have that visual draw, as does a wine or beer glass for the same reason. They are so much more a part of someone's person than the furniture or other surroundings, because we interact with them in (I suppose) somehow a more personal way. What a lovely piece and beautiful sketches. Thank you for re-posting it. And have a great Summer!
Yes, I think you’re exactly right, that makes so much sense. They sort of become part of the beloved landscape of our lives. And in the case of a favorite cup, one may spend an inordinate amount of time with it! Thank you for the kind words and for taking the time to read my cup story!
Lovely. Your creative skills and the “accessibility” of your emotions may require a bigger palette (an example of a trope called synecdoche, I believe, where one thing is used to symbolize the greater whole). Thinking about that may require another cup—or two!
My wife and I are addicted to cups. We can’t stop buying them wherever we go. It’s a sickness, as we’ve admitted to ourselves many times. Last week we bought a large antique sideboard and put it where our cup racks hung. So now our prized collection is setting on the dining room table waiting for us to find a new place to display them.
Oh no, the poor cups, displaced from their home. I hope you find a good spot to display them soon. I love looking at my collections of pretty things. I am wasting the best shelf in my pantry by setting the pretty things out where I can see them the most clearly. I think collecting pretty and unique things is not a sickness, but a reasonable solution to the problem of making your home feel like your own private paradise. So enjoy your collection and the thrill of adding to it!
Oh Jenn, cups mean so much! I totally resonate and cherish cups! From that first warm greeting of the day, to the difficult decisions, and the waves of life crashing into us, those cups are there. Bearing witness to the tears, listening to the fears and celebrating the resilience and the brilliance of love and life. What you wrote here is moving and the sketches just paint such a deeper story. Thank you for inviting me into your own story, as it deeply opens the door to my own too. 🙏❤️ Thanks for making my day! This was pure poetry.
Yes!!!! I’m so happy you feel the same way about cups! I love the way you’ve laid it out. Thank you so much for reading and sharing your thoughts with me, I really appreciate it. I hope you enjoy some coffee this weekend, too!
That’s crazy that you had a mystery experience today, too! Not a weekend goes by that I don’t have a fleeting remembrance of these well loved cups. Life is funny and sometimes we get the thing that we need to get us through. I think we needed those cups until we didn’t. I am still unpacking the whole thing. I am so happy that I gave you a laugh and the red painting lives beside my coffee machine. It’s a favorite of mine, too. Thank you so much for bringing this story back to me and for your infinitely kind commentary ❤️
That’s a beautiful reflection Jenn. The breaking of your coffee cups seems to signify the end of one chapter and the beginning of another, marking a significant transition in your life, as you were settling into your new surroundings. Unpacking your things. That they both broke on the same day suggests that you and your husband were moving forward in sync, sharing the journey of change. What an amazing mystical coincidence!
Wow, Charlotte 😲. Now that several years have elapsed since this event I can say you are 100% right. I have never really looked at it this way, and now I won’t be able to see it any other way. Thank you so much for this divine interpretation, I am so grateful you shared this with me. Have the best Monday ❤️✨🎉
This is such a wonderful comment, thank you so very much! This is one of my favorites, to be honest. The whole arc of the existence of these strange cups makes me wonder. I think about them on weekends whenever I make coffee for my husband and I. You could not believe the convos they were a party to. Thank you for your service, mystical cups. And thank you, Amy.

Thank you, Hugh, that is a very kind comment, and yes, I think I shall have a long think about it over a cup or two. I appreciate you very much!
"Life happens around cups of warmth." Love this!
Thanks so much!! I appreciate it!
Enjoyed the way you wrote the story about the pair of cups! Serendipity albeit in brokenness. XO
